Wellness Visits

At P.A.W. Vet Clinic in Mount Airy, MD, we believe that regular checkups and wellness exams are critical to your pet’s well-being. Regular checkups allow us to establish a baseline in your pet’s health and make us aware of any changes that may indicate future problems. We highly recommend bringing your pet in for regular exams. Often times health problems that go undetected can become more serious issues when left untreated, so checkups are important even when your pet appears healthy.
Not only do these exams keep us up-to-date with your pet’s health, but they also allow us to detect potential problems before they become serious. This thorough checkup gives us vital information to help keep your pet healthy!
Regular wellness exams also make your pet more familiar with our veterinary hospital, which makes future visits easier on them and you. Please contact us today if you have any questions or would like to learn more about how we care for your pet.

Alternative Medicine

When it comes to treating pets who are dealing with serious illnesses, joint pain, and digestive problems, a comprehensive approach to care that considers all traditional and holistic therapies can produce best results. At P.A.W. Veterinary, we are proud to offer pets the benefits of alternative veterinary treatment in Mt. Airy. Whether your pet has been diagnosed with a disease or is experiencing health issues as they age, our alternative medical treatments can help.
Veterinary Acupuncture, Massage, and Custom Diets
Before recommending alternative veterinary medicine to care for your pet, we welcome them into our office for an initial exam, where our veterinary team can gather an in-depth medical history and conduct a physical exam, where we examine pulse and tongue. Our veterinarian often recommends alternative medicine in conjunction with a comprehensive treatment plan to address what is ailing your pet.
Our options for alternative veterinary care include:
Veterinary acupuncture treatment does not require sedation and utilizes very fine needles to help stimulate key points on animals’ bodies. Most animals are not bothered by the needles and are free to wander around the room for half an hour while they are being treated. While most treatment incorporates dry needles, Dr. Brobst-Wormell can also inject needles with vitamin B before application, a process called aquapuncture, to help promote increased appetite and energy. For pets with joint pain, acupuncture needles can also be use with electro treatment to help alleviate discomfort and promote improved stimulation to the treatment area.
In many cases, our Mt. Airy holistic veterinarian follows acupuncture with massage therapy that also focuses on points that were targeted with acupuncture. During massage treatment, we follow what pets and owners prefer. While some pets love massage treatment, others do not. Our team makes sure to only provide what pets can tolerate and what is best for their needs. For pets that respond well to veterinary massage, we can also provide tips on how pet owners can continue massage treatment at home.
For pets experiencing a variety of health problems, from kidney issues to arthritis, PAW Veterinary Clinic often supplements traditional medicine with Chinese medical herbal formulas, which can help decrease the amount of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications that pets are prescribed. This combination of traditional and holistic veterinary care can help to make the treatment process for your pet easier to tolerate.
In some cases, certain ailments can also be alleviated by introducing key ingredients into your pet’s existing diet. Components such as essential fatty acids and other nutrients can be added to help treat skin issues or other common health problems. Balancing your pet’s diet with nutrients is sometimes easier than taking a pill and, depending on their needs, can produce similar results.
For more information on how holistic pet medicine that includes veterinary acupuncture, massage, herbs and diet changes can help your pet in recovering from illness and injury, contact P.A.W. Veterinary Clinic.

Dentistry

Dental care is vital to the overall health of any pet. Dental disease can lead to health issues with the heart, liver, and kidneys, and can affect the entire body through the bloodstream. In fact, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over three years of age suffer from some form of dental disease, making it the most common pet health issue among our pet population.
In spite of these disturbing facts, many pet owners are not aware of the importance of dental care to their pet’s health. There are a lot of different ways to improve your pet’s dental hygiene, including home brushing, dental chews, and regular inspection.
The most effective way to protect your pet from dental disease is through professional cleanings. We perform thorough cleanings here at P.A.W. Vet Clinic, including the area beneath the gums that you can’t see or access at home.
If your pet has brown/yellow teeth, bad breath, or is having difficulty eating, these could all be signs of dental disease. Please call us at (301) 829-1229 today to learn more and schedule your pet’s dental cleaning.

Dermatology

Your pet’s skin is the largest organ of its body. Allergies, parasites, infections, autoimmune diseases and cancers can all affect your pet’s skin. Skin diseases are very common in dogs and cats and can be frustrating and challenging to diagnose and treat without proper knowledge and tests. They can also make your pet miserable. Dermatology is the study of skin diseases and we are here to help ensure that your pet’s skin stays healthy throughout its life. We are knowledgeable and ready to help you walk what may seem like a daunting maze of tests and procedures to get to the bottom of your pet’s skin issues.
Many pets we see have had skin issues for months, or even years with itchiness, scabbing, or hair loss. Your pet’s veterinarian can discuss options that will help diagnose the underlying condition that is causing the skin problems. Tests may include allergy testing, looking at skin preparations under a microscope, and possibly even skin biopsies. These results will guide your pet’s veterinarian decide what treatment options are best for you and your pet, and what will allow the quickest resolution of your pet’s skin condition.
We offer specific diagnostic tests like allergy testing, fungal testing, cultures and biopsies, along with the most cutting edge treatments to ensure the health of your pet’s skin.

Besides vaccinations, spaying and neutering your pet is one of the best things that you can do for them! When you spay and neuter your pets, you give them a better chance at a happy life! They often live longer because they are less likely to run away, get in fights, or get hit by cars. They are less likely to get certain types of cancers. Females are less likely to get pyometras and other deadly diseases. Males are less likely to spray and have other behavioral problems! Spaying and neutering your pets also helps with the overpopulation of animals. There are way too many animals that are euthanized each year because no one can adopt them. P.A.W. Vet Clinic is pleased to help you spay or neuter your pet. If you have any questions or would like more information on our spaying and neutering services, please contact us today at (301) 829-1229 .
